INDIAN IDOL 4 JAVED AKTAR Said

Akhtar, who was here for the auditions of Indian Idol 4, says judging is a cushy job.

Excerpts from the interview:

Q. This is the fourth time in a row that you will be judging Indian Idol. Any comments?

A. Indian Idol is the first talent hunt show and it's a win-win situation for all. First, the audience is entertained. Second, it's lucrative for the channel. Third, small town talents, who never thought of making it to the nation, get a platform to showcase their talents. Fourth, we, the judges, get paid just by sitting idle and criticising others.

Q. Why is it that we have not had a female Indian Idol so far?

A. It's very disappointing for me as well. If you have watched the previous shows, you would have noticed that as long as I could, I helped the girl contestants to get totally fair chances.

But somehow voting mein garbar ho jati hai harbar. (During voting, something wrong happens every time).

The fact is in our society male contestants are preferred by not only men but also women. In our society, a woman has to be three times better than a man to compete with him and thank god that is not difficult.

Hope the mindset changes this year and we get our first female Indian Idol. As it is we are getting more girl contestants this time.

Q. Is it true that there is a lot of pressure on the judges?

A. We don't have any pressure. Our job is to choose the aspiring idols and present them to the public to choose. But, yes, at times there is a lot of pressure on the channel.

Most of the people who vote hardly have any knowledge of singing. So why take their votes for granted?

But ultimately it's the channel that decides the idol. Isn't it? How can the channel decide the idol? Every thing is computerised. Koi garbar karna (Doing anything wrong) is impossible.

Q. These days we are seeing a lot of Javed Akhtar - the judge in many reality shows. What is it in judging that interests you?

A. Judging is a cushy job. You sit back, relax and comment or criticise others' performance. Jokes apart, by judging shows I get to meet so many talents with whom otherwise I would not have interacted. In the show Lead India I met some exceptionally talented intellectuals, in Indian Idol I heard some immensely talented singers.

Q. Your son Farhan is all set to act in the Bollywood film Rocker. How do you feel?

A. Farhan will be showing me the first cuts of his film within a few days. He pleasantly surprised me when he directed Dil Chahta Hai. And now his new avatar will surely "rock" me.

Q. Almost all members of your family (ex-wife Honey Irani, son Farhan Akhtar and daughter Zoya Akhtar) are directors. When are you going to direct a film?

A. Writing is an addiction and once you get addicted, it's very difficult to concentrate on other things. It makes you lazy and no job seems more interesting than writing. Often I think I will do this and that but ultimately land up with my pen and paper. I am too lazy to make films.

Q. What's your take about the young generation of lyricists?

A. Priorities of society over the last 30 years have dramatically changed. There is a shrinking of language in today's society. Young lyricists don't give enough importance to the craft of poetry. Passion, emotion and fantasy are important. But craft is the science of lyrics writing. I personally believe that Bollywood songs were the worst in the 1980s. Thankfully, youngsters have realised that and are working at it.

Q. What are your forthcoming projects?

A. I have just finished writing a book on poetry called Lava. Besides there are a few films; recent releases include Love Story 2050 and BR Films' Banda yeh bindaas hai.

Q. Are you watching Twenty20? Which team are you supporting?

A. Though I have written the Mumbai Indians' team anthem, I have started watching the matches only recently. As for supporting a team, I only support India when it plays against other countries. Here it's an intra-country match. So no question of supporting, but only enjoying.

Q. What do you think about the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) team?

A. KKR-owner Shah Rukh Khan is an old friend of mine. So I wish the best for his team.

The Fourth Season of Indian Idol begins

Indian Idol, the show with a distinctive and breakthrough concept is back with Season 4!!! Yes, the most popular reality show of Indian television, Indian Idol is back with its new season. This will be followed by auditions in Delhi, Gwalior, Jaipur, Kolkatta, Lucknow and Mumbai.

In Ahmedabad, the Indian Idol express will make rounds of high traffic areas with ex- Indian Idol contestants Ankita and Charu sharing their memorable experiences of the third season and calling people to participate the auditions. The bus will move across the city on Monday April 7^th, post 3.00 p.m. covering the following areas: Fun Republic, Iskon Mall, Himalaya Mall, and Law Garden (at C G Road).

On April 8^th, the bus will cover Nav Gujarat Income Tax, Akhbaar Nagar, Shahi Bagh, Dili Darbar, Shahpur, Nehru Bridge (Opp Rupali Center), Kakarya Bus Station & Bapu Nagar.

'Indian Idol' contestants form a band

How did the plan to form a band come up?

Post a talent hunt show, most of the contestants go solo and that way, we have a lot of solo artistes. After Indian Idol III drew to an end, I asked myself, ' Aaj to popular ho, kal kya hoga ?'

Meanwhile, I was giving the idea of band a thought and the whole thing came about when the channel gave us a similar proposal. F4, our band comprises Abhishek, Suhit, Parleen and me. Three of us were in the final 10 and another member was in the final 20.

Do you think the band concept will sell?

I'm keeping my fingers crossed. But it's true that we bonded well on the show and have grown from the musical aspect.

But very few bands bond for a long period.

Yes, band break-ups do bother me, but I'm hopeful that it won't happen in our case. We share a
common passion — music. I'm certain that this boy band will click.

So, what kind of music are you thinking of making?

At this point of time we are thinking of mixing different genres. Romantic songs are our forté and we've also recreated a few old tracks like Chhu kar mere man ko, Ek ajnabi and Pal pal.

The idea is to connect with the younger generation. At the same time, we want to retain the soul of the songs. Some of the originals are composed by Leslie Lewis, Amit Trivedi and Ajay Singha.

How was the Indian Idol experience?

It was very satisfying. Meri puri zindagi palat gayi . Had I not taken part in the show, I would have been confined to the four walls of a chamber. I knew from the very beginning that something in my life was missing, kuchh karna hai .

How did feel you when one of the judges on the show, Alisha Chinai, said she'll quit after you were voted out?

I was really touched. Ma'am was very good to me and we've taken the relationship to a personal level. But about her decision to quit the show, I didn't expect that. Maybe, she didn't expect me to get eliminated.

It's great to know that after so many years in the industry, someone can be so concerned about just another face in the crowd. She has also said that she would like me to be a part of one of her albums. Isn't that great? It would be a dream come true.

Do you blame the voting system for your elimination?

The voting system is as fair as it can get. There were better singers on the show and I knew from the very
beginning that I wouldn't win. But I expected to be in the top three. My friends had warned me saying the contestants look stupid when they cry onscreen, but after being voted out, I couldn't hold back my tears.

Your chemistry with another contestant, Deepali, was also talked about. You even gifted her a rose on camera...

That was part of the song that I was singing. Deepali and me are very close friends but that's just it. You might consider this to be a diplomatic answer, but there's no more truth to the story than that. I'm single and ready to mingle.

Women seem to be drooling over you...

When I started off, the girls in my college were really encouraging. Indian Idol followed suit and I know that the fairer sex finds me cute. But honestly, I'm a shy guy and haven't yet found anyone who would sweep me off my feet. I don't know how to handle popularity yet and I'm not targeting women either! At the same time, I wouldn't be sad if someone smiles finding me cute.

Have you given up on your career in medicine?

After finishing my studies I worked in Bangalore for a year. But after getting through to the Indian Idol III auditions, I didn't want to give up on the same.

At the same time, my dad, uncle and grandfather are all dentists. Right now, I'm concentrating more on music but maybe two years down the line, I would be able to balance both. If Aditi Gowatrikar can be a
supermodel and a doctor at the same time, I can also try.

So, you are ready to take on the popular bands...

We want healthy competition. Kisi ko kahin se hatana nahin hai . In fact, there's a lot of satisfaction in collaboration and we would like to do the same with other bands and popular musicians.

I'm floored by the way people have accepted me, despite not being trained in music.

Excitement and freshness has died down in Indian Idol

Amit Sana who lost to Abhijeet Sawant in the finals of 'Indian Idol 1' is back with a new album 'Yaadein'. The Bhillai boy says he wants to concentrate on his album and then he will think of playback in a real way. Let's read what Amit has to say about his album and other things.

Q. First of all, we will like to know about the album.....
A. The name of the album is 'Yaadein'. The music and lyrics have been given by different musicians and lyricists. The album is very romantic, I feel. It has eight songs out of which five are original and three are remixes.

It has all moods of love. One song in the album is a little Arabic. I feel the youngsters will be able to relate to the songs.

Q. What is the theme of your album? Going by the glimpses of the video it looks a little sad.....
A. (Stresses) No, it is not sad at all. It is more on the emotional side. It deals with the relation of the boy and girl on the emotional side when they miss each other, the songs deal with the different aspects of love not only the sad part.

Q. The video of your album looks classy; we will like to know who is behind it and what was your thought process while deciding on this type of video?
A. There was a song of Enrique Iglesias, 'Somebody's me' that came recently, I listen to him a lot and we were planning to make a video with a Latin look because my skin tone is dark.

We were planning a similar look for our video and the mood of this song. 'Yaadein' matched and we made this video. The video is directed by Raj Pindulkar. We had many ideas, but finalized this concept.

Q. What do you say about 'Asian Idol'? Was Abhijeet Sawant's choice correct?
A. See, 'Asian Idol' was a program where all the winners from different Asian countries were invited to participate.

Here they had planned a competition between the three winners of 'Indian Idol', but some how the competition could not be held due to date problems. So, they send the first winner Abhijeet.

Q. What do you think is the reason that the benefits reaped by the three the finalists of first 'Indian Idol' got is more than that of the winners of 'Indian Idol- 2 and 3' ?
A. This year the response has been very good and everybody is getting benefited.

I would say that 'Indian Idol' had started that year and every body was eager and there was a lot of suspense but after that many shows on the same pattern came and the excitement level of the audiences died down as all the shows were following almost the same format and there was no freshness.

And it is always said that the first one makes a special impact and is not comparable.

Q. Will you like to tell us about the songs of the album?
A. As I said, the album has eight songs of which five are original and the other three are remixes of the originals..

'Yaadein' with music by Sufian and lyrics by Hanif Sheikh has a painful feeling.'Woh ho Tum' depicts a healthy relationship where they are missing each other. 'Khalish' deals with misunderstanding, where both the boy and girl are missing each other.

The fourth song has an element of 'Masti' where they tease each other. This has a little flavor of Arabic and here the boy sees the girl in her college or school, but when he comes home then also he sees her everywhere.

Q. Which song from your collection do you consider to be the best?
A. It is difficult to say because there are many and every song I sing is close to my heart. I would say 'Yaadein' from my album and the song that will come after that. The song in 'Kalyug' was also successful.

Q. Name one song….
A. Then I would say 'Yaadein' from this album. I consider it to be the best amongst the songs sung by me.

Q. What is happening with your playback singing these days?
A. I sang in a few films like 'Kalyug' and 'Delhi Heights'. I have sung in the film 'Ek Tha Deewana.' Madhavan and Dino Morea are in the film. I am not sure about it. The real thing is that I am concentrating on my album as I want people to know my strengths and what I can sing and what suits my voice.

Q. What, according to you, is the reason that listeners should buy your album?
A. I had said many things during 'Indian idol' and my brother had also said so. I think to know how much I have been able to fulfill those, they should buy one copy of my album. I have tried to give my best.

My attempt is to give something really good to my listeners. I have made songs that people will like to listen to at least 100 times and songs that they will relate to.

I am saying I have tried because at last all depends on the listeners whether they like it or not but I will say I have enjoyed composing and they are close to my heart. I feel people should buy the album to try it out at least.

Q. When is the launch of your album?
A. The date is not fixed till now, but probably we will launch it on January 17. -Sonu Anand
