“I still cannot believe that I have become the Indian Idol,” smiling Sourabhee said.

The north-east “rock star” won the coveted prize of a music contract of Rs10 million with Sony TV and a SUV from Tata.

The result was based on public voting.

Sourabhee has no professional training in music. Both her parents are government employees.

Bollywood stars John Abraham, Katrina Kaif and Neil Nitin Mukesh were also on the stage as part of the grand finale that was marked with songs and anecdotes.

Immediate past winner Prashant Tamang as well as Indian Idol contestants were also present.

Others from the Indian film and music industry, including judges Javed Akhtar, Anu Malik, Kailash Kher and Sonali Bendre, too were present to cheer the finalist.

“Every time I performed on stage, I have been nervous. But this time, I am very excited and eagerly waiting for the finale,” says Torsha. “I have worked hard to reach where I am. There were times when I was about to get eliminated but got saved everytime. Maybe it was my positive thinking that got me through.”

The judges love Sourabhee. Is she insecure? “All of us are winners because we have reached the finals,” she says, taking a diplomatic stand. “Sourabhee is the judges’ favourite because she has the complete package. She is a rock star. But this doesn’t make me insecure. The judges have their own opinion but it’s the audience who will vote for the winner,” she says.

Did she expect to make it in the top three? “I had a gut feeling that I would make it to the top,” she says. “I also expected Rajeep and Sourabhee in the finale. Kapil worked really hard to reach the finals and I am very happy for him.”

Torsha’s best compliments came from Sonu Nigam and Javed Akhtar. “Sonuji said that I am a complete singer and with little more riyaz [practice], I can polish my singing and can get into playback singing. And Javedji called me a Bengal tigress,” she adds.

Whether she wins or not, Torsha loved the experience. “My personality has changed after coming on this show,” she says. “I got to meet many people from the industry, which would have not been possible without this show. I have made many friends; Mohit is my best friend. People recognise me and ask me for autographs. All this makes me feel good. I have got a very good response from West Bengal. I even met Emon [Indian Idol participant] who requested the audience to vote for me [smiles).”

What after Indian Idol? “Entering the Hindi film industry has always been my dream,” she says. “I wanted to explore it with my music and playback singing. Whether I win or not doesn’t matter because I want to shift base to Mumbai. If I win, I will invest most of the money in my dad’s hospital and rest for myself,” she signs off.

“I am concentrating on the rehearsals,” she says. “I want to give my best and dance well because I love dancing.”

Did she expect to be among the top three? “I was surprised when I was selected because all the trained singers were rejected,” she answers. “Once I started performing, I got confidence and that helped me to reach the top 10. After that, I wanted to be in the top three. Now I am nervous because I want to win the title.”

That may not be very tough because, as Sourabhee admits, she’s the judges’ favourite. They even nicknamed her the Indian Shakira. “They like my performances and I’m consistent. But the results are based on votes so they can be unpredictable,” she says.

Her most memorable moment was the time when Sonam Kapoor gifted her a costume from Delhi 6 when the actress came on the show. Another favourite moment was when Sonali Bendre learnt dance steps from Sourabhee.

But her favourite judge isn’t Bendre; it is Anu Malik. “He would scold me for a bad performance and that’s why I would work hard and better my next performance,” she explains.

Sourabhee’s popularity can be seen when she visited her hometown. “People from all communities lined the streets to get a glimpse of me,” she says. “I don’t think any politician would have got such a welcome [smiles].”

But she’s realistic, and knows that she faces stiff competition from the other finalists. “I knew Kapil would be in the finals. Torsha has a unique voice, so she is a tough competitor too,” she says.

Whether she wins or not, Sourabhee has enjoyed the experience. “I always underestimated myself so I worked hard. After I started getting compliments and reached the top 10, I felt I should work harder to reach the top three. Now I have become greedy. I want to win the title.”

Sourabhee is very thrilled that her parents, sister and the King of Tripura will be there to support her on D-Day. “If I don’t win, it will be an insult in front of the king,” she says.

“I didn’t expect to reach this far,” he says. “I had gone for the audition hoping to get selected. Now, my confidence has grown. It’s a dream come true to be the finalist of India Idol 4. I am the luckiest amongst the boys, as I’ve reached the finale.”

This is the first time that girls have made it to the Indian Idol finals. Asked if there was any bias from the judges, he replies, “Not at all. Rather, I would thank the audience and the judges for supporting us. This is the first time girls are in the top three. Everyone wants a girl to become an idol this time. Both of them are good but I can give them competition [smiles]. But what’s important is that our friendship remains intact.”

kapil thanga

Kapil, however, did not expect the girls to make it to the finals. Instead, he expected Sourabhee Debbarma and Rajeep Chaterjee to join him in the finals. “Rajeep is a very good singer. He lost out because of less votes,” he explains.

“I am very happy that Torsha and I are sharing the stage at the finale. She has surprised everyone,” he adds.

The best compliment he received was from judges Anu Malik and Kailesh Kher for a patriotic song. “Anuji said I sang the song with ease while Kailashji said the song touched his heart and soul,” Kapil smiles.

Taking about the judges he says, “Javed Akhtar would scold me for my bad diction and Anuji would scold for not singing well. But backstage, he was very friendly with everyone. All the judges were very supportive and we learnt a lot from them. My favourite judge is Anuji because he supported me right from the beginning.”

Asked why the audience should vote for him and he says, “My voice is good and one can sense the truth from my words. The feelings with which I sing songs are genuine. So I think audience should vote for me,” he said.

Kapil is excited that his parents and some army friends will come for the finale to support him. What will he do with the prize money should he win? “I will give a part of it to my parents, to an NGO and keep the rest for myself,” he replies.

INDIAN IDOL 4 JAVED AKTAR Said

Akhtar, who was here for the auditions of Indian Idol 4, says judging is a cushy job.

Excerpts from the interview:

Q. This is the fourth time in a row that you will be judging Indian Idol. Any comments?

A. Indian Idol is the first talent hunt show and it's a win-win situation for all. First, the audience is entertained. Second, it's lucrative for the channel. Third, small town talents, who never thought of making it to the nation, get a platform to showcase their talents. Fourth, we, the judges, get paid just by sitting idle and criticising others.

Q. Why is it that we have not had a female Indian Idol so far?

A. It's very disappointing for me as well. If you have watched the previous shows, you would have noticed that as long as I could, I helped the girl contestants to get totally fair chances.

But somehow voting mein garbar ho jati hai harbar. (During voting, something wrong happens every time).

The fact is in our society male contestants are preferred by not only men but also women. In our society, a woman has to be three times better than a man to compete with him and thank god that is not difficult.

Hope the mindset changes this year and we get our first female Indian Idol. As it is we are getting more girl contestants this time.

Q. Is it true that there is a lot of pressure on the judges?

A. We don't have any pressure. Our job is to choose the aspiring idols and present them to the public to choose. But, yes, at times there is a lot of pressure on the channel.

Most of the people who vote hardly have any knowledge of singing. So why take their votes for granted?

But ultimately it's the channel that decides the idol. Isn't it? How can the channel decide the idol? Every thing is computerised. Koi garbar karna (Doing anything wrong) is impossible.

Q. These days we are seeing a lot of Javed Akhtar - the judge in many reality shows. What is it in judging that interests you?

A. Judging is a cushy job. You sit back, relax and comment or criticise others' performance. Jokes apart, by judging shows I get to meet so many talents with whom otherwise I would not have interacted. In the show Lead India I met some exceptionally talented intellectuals, in Indian Idol I heard some immensely talented singers.

Q. Your son Farhan is all set to act in the Bollywood film Rocker. How do you feel?

A. Farhan will be showing me the first cuts of his film within a few days. He pleasantly surprised me when he directed Dil Chahta Hai. And now his new avatar will surely "rock" me.

Q. Almost all members of your family (ex-wife Honey Irani, son Farhan Akhtar and daughter Zoya Akhtar) are directors. When are you going to direct a film?

A. Writing is an addiction and once you get addicted, it's very difficult to concentrate on other things. It makes you lazy and no job seems more interesting than writing. Often I think I will do this and that but ultimately land up with my pen and paper. I am too lazy to make films.

Q. What's your take about the young generation of lyricists?

A. Priorities of society over the last 30 years have dramatically changed. There is a shrinking of language in today's society. Young lyricists don't give enough importance to the craft of poetry. Passion, emotion and fantasy are important. But craft is the science of lyrics writing. I personally believe that Bollywood songs were the worst in the 1980s. Thankfully, youngsters have realised that and are working at it.

Q. What are your forthcoming projects?

A. I have just finished writing a book on poetry called Lava. Besides there are a few films; recent releases include Love Story 2050 and BR Films' Banda yeh bindaas hai.

Q. Are you watching Twenty20? Which team are you supporting?

A. Though I have written the Mumbai Indians' team anthem, I have started watching the matches only recently. As for supporting a team, I only support India when it plays against other countries. Here it's an intra-country match. So no question of supporting, but only enjoying.

Q. What do you think about the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) team?

A. KKR-owner Shah Rukh Khan is an old friend of mine. So I wish the best for his team.
